BUNT CAKE

The process blog of Sarah Evenson
As a little kid I remember that I was obsessed with the idea of child monsters— what did they do? Were they scared of me? Did they love their monster parents? This watercolor offers one of the many ideas I had about what a monster child would look like, namely, like me but not like me.
Julius is both over eager and over weight. He belongs to that special age where you’re disgusting but you don’t know it yet, where you’re unappealing but you haven’t yet learned to hate yourself. That stuff comes later in life, and it will come later for Julius when he becomes an adolescent monster— angry, fierce, and greasy— but for now he is a child monster, all soft fur and effervescent albinism.
